Totally True!
The US American spaceship ‘Challenger’ explodes shortly after its start. Every member of the crew died, including 6 astronauts and a private person, the teacher Christa McAuliffe. January 1986.
I remember this because of the female teacher being on board was, wow...we'd all waved her off either in person or from our televisions. I'm not sure they put anyone except astronauts on the missions after that until recently, or perhaps never since. It was really sad and on live TV it was wired into classrooms - again because teacher was on board, and we all watched it blow up from ours desks, every classroom in the world had a visit from the AV department, wheeling in this contraption of television on a stand and no matter who was pulling it around the fucker was beyond cumbersome. At the time though - cutting edge technology, tv? IN SCHOOL? Not a film strip? Shut the fuck up!
So when we all eagerly watched this shuttle launch, and explode, it was surreal and I teared up a little in posting this. This sort of thing just did not happen, and live far-reaching media coverage was fairly new, it was shocking and really awful.
