80's Lore - When Videos Told a Story

This song spurred masses of Pat look-a-likes and was... I'd call it junior-punk.  It (sic) was the first 'fuck you' music that wasn't metal.

Way cool!  It's a comic wait it's a video, wait it's......awesome!!!

 



1984: Laura Brannigan:  Self Control
I was roughly six years old when this song came out and I certainly never saw the video.  Until the making of this blog I thought the song was about a battle between good and evil of ... creatures of the night of course!  I pictured her a fairy-thing running about a forest with imps and such trying to tempt her their way.  As an adult watching this... I have no idea what the fuck is going on.  It classifies as telling a story but.... it's a weird one. Video Bizarre.





1986: Madonna: Papa Don't Preach:
This caused a stir, nothing like what she'd do in the future and looking back it's kinda pervy to remember that seven and eight year old girl were dancing and singing this.  We had no relatable definition to the shit we'd parrot.  The current version would be women who dance to Get Low and sing "skeet skeet" like it's not intensely demeaning and disgusting.  /shrug.

• John McCarthy, a British journalist was kidnapped by Islamic Jihad. Remained in captivity for a staggering 5.5 years.
• Supermodel Gia, after years of heroin addiction, dies of AIDS. She is the first woman to sucumb to the AIDS virus in the US.  She is a really interesting story, I believe a very young Angelina Jolie plays Gia in the movie about her life.
